About us and our aims

Who we are

RE-think: Don’t Break the Heart of Wales was set up in March 2023 in response to plans by Bute Energy Ltd to build up to 20 renewable energy parks across Wales, along with associated infrastructure and power lines.

Although RE-think’s efforts are focussed largely on developments proposed in Brecon and Radnor, we have set up an Alliance through which we work with similar groups throughout the region.

What we do

RE-think is campaigning to stop the industrialization of Mid Wales by renewable energy companies such as Bute Energy Ltd.  Bute Energy’s proposed flagship project, Nant Mithil Energy Park in Radnor Forest would include 31 turbines up to 220 metres tall. There would also be a new electricity substation linked via an overhead power line to the grid in Carmarthenshire 60 miles away.  Solar arrays and battery storage facilities may also feature in the plans.

We are also working hard to arm our local communities with the facts about these developments.  For example, the inefficiency of intermittent onshore renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, the environmental damage of turbine construction, the financial realities of these largescale schemes and why these projects are not beneficial to Wales.

Why are we doing it

RE-think’s members and supporters believe that developments such as Nant Mithil are unnecessary.  Floating offshore wind projects being planned in the Celtic Sea and other offshore schemes will provide all the power that Wales needs to meet its renewable energy targets.  Additional capacity will be available to export to England and elsewhere.  The group also strongly supports small wind and solar projects built near to the communities using them and encourages the development of other forms of renewable technology.

RE-think’s Campaign Lead Jenny Chryss said: “It’s taken a supreme effort by the whole team to get to where we are so quickly, but we had to act fast.  Nant Mithil is just one planned energy park; if it gets the go-ahead there will be many more to follow.  These developments plus the associated pylons and other infrastructure would destroy landscapes and livelihoods, along with the environment, wildlife and ecology.   Tourists who come for the beauty of the area would no longer be drawn here if it was covered in turbines and pylons.  People are frantic with worry; it’s just not needed and it has to be stopped.”
